Spanish Riding School
The Spanish Riding School is a popular tourist attraction in Vienna. Their performances are an 80-minute show of experienced and traditional Lipizzan horse riding.
The Spanish Riding School is located in several buildings on the Square Michaelerplatz and the Sqaure Josefsplatz, close to the Hofburg, in the centre of Vienna.
You can see the performances in the Winter Riding School. This place is an elegant riding hall whicht was completed in 1735.
The Spanish Riding School (German: Spanische Hofreitschule, literal translation: Imperial Court Spanish Riding School) was established during the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1572. The Spanish Riding School received it's name for the Spanish horses, which still are the biggest attraction. But nowadays the horses come from a court stud in Lipica (Italian: Lipizza), close to the Italian city of Triest, but since the end of world war II in todays Slovenia, and the Piber Stud which is located in the western part of the Austrian federal state Styria.
The riders of the horses wear the traditional brown frock coat uniform with bicorne hats, and all horses wear red and gold saddle cloths.
